Recipe for salsa like Chili's

With all this hoopla about tacos, I thought it would be fitting to share a really good copycat recipe for salsa like Chili's. It only takes a couple of minutes to make, and is a huge hit in our house. The ingredients are pretty basic staples that you probably already have in your pantry.

 Ingredients:

1 can diced tomatoes
1/2 of an onion, peeled (about 1/2 cup)
1 tbsp lime juice
3 tbsp canned diced jalapenos
1/4 tsp cumin
1 tsp salt

Directions:

Dump all the ingredients into a blender, and blend until smooth. Enjoy!

So easy, but oh, so good!!! And, it tastes every bit like the stuff at Chili's.

  1. First the taco, now salsa.

You really do love to stir up trouble...*wink*

  2. I want to try this - it looks great! Now, if you could just show me how to make their thin crispy chips...maybe that's a good thing b/c I could eat an entire basket myself. Thanks for sharing. -Natalie in NC

  3. I knew it! You are starving your children. I'll bet Chilis uses 2 tsp. of lime juice. I am sure you even skimped the lime juice last Christmas.

I think it's a result of those Krispy Kreme doughnuts your children get to eat once a year on their birthday.

Even your husband looks lime juice deprived! Good thing you do not have the world's health insurance because with the obvious lack of lime juice you would be turned down.

You should just give up salsa making. Put all of your children in a daycare (where they can get more lime juice) and "work". Staying at home, cleaning and cooking from scratch, nurturing babies, home schooling is NOT work. Only abandoning your children, eating real Chili's salsa and going to work as a cog in a wheel is work.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. :-) The whle taco attack has just been too funny.

This looks delicious. I hope to make some with my little ones today.

  4. Ohhh. Thanks for this post. I really like their salsa. I can't wait to try
    this.

Now, your next mission, if you choose to accept it, is finding out Chili's Queso dip recipe (I love that stuff). haha.

    Missionarymomma, you are hysterical.

  5. Looks great! Ive never had Chili's salsa so I have bit of a question for you - if you wanted to make a mild version of salsa would you replace the jalapenos with something else or reduce the amount of jalapenos?

  6. missionarymomma, how did you know that about the lime juice? I guess all the photos on the blog can't lie...

    Thanks for the laugh!!!

Kimmie, I have two books with copycat recipes for a whole bunch of restaurants. The recipes are all really, really good. Not sure if that is in there, but there are a ton of other ones from Chili's. I plan on posting more soon (recipes are not copyrighted, neither can be).

Laura, this salsa is not spicy at all. As far as I know, canned jalapenos are usually very mild. If you are not sure, you could start out with adding only 1 tablespoon, taste test, and then add more if you can "handle" it.

  7. Laura - you might try substituting a little bit of canned green chili peppers. They're milder and will still give a peppery taste.

    Missionarymomma - that was funny.

Who would have thought tacos would be such a hot button topic?

  8. More homemade Mexican food? Let the controversy begin.

  9. I love Mexican food. The problem is that I love Mexican food. Did I mention I love Mexican food?!

I don't cook nearly as often as I should (that 80 hr work week thing again - saving for adoption fees) and there is a Mexican restaurant (can't eat the fast food version...yuck) all too close to my home. Good thing I'm so busy or I'd probably eat there more often (and be a whole lot larger) than I am..ha!

  10. Zsuzsanna,
I made the salsa last night and it was a huge hit so I wanted to say thanks for the recipe! I would have never thought it would be so simple to make! I was nervous about the jalapenos but the salsa was amazing and not hot at all.
