Ring sling sewing tutorial and giveaway

Having a baby carrier is a great tool for getting things done in spite of a baby that wants to be held 24/7.

There are different kinds of carriers, each with their own advantages. My two favorites are ring slings, and the K'tan carrier (like a wrap, but much easier to use).

My girls love holding the baby, which is a great help to me. When Chloe was a baby, I bought Miriam the smallest size K'tan, which worked well for her. She is now using it for Peter. Becca has been asking to have her own carrier as well, but even the smallest K'tan is still too large on her as she is petite for her age.

I had the idea to make her a sized-down ring sling instead. Becca loves it, as does Peter.

Ring slings are very easy to make, even for adults. Here is a tutorial on how to make a ring sling (adult or child size):

I had extra fabric from making Becca's sling that I used for the sling in the tutorial. I am giving away this extra child-size sling. Please do not enter if you don't have a child that could use this, unless you are a tiny adult with a tiny baby.

I assume no liability for use of the sling. Children should be closely supervised while holding a baby.

  2. My daughter is 12 and my spine isn't really capable of carrying my baby all the time. I have a carrier that a wonderful friend gave to me just before my baby was born but it's still an adult size. This would be a great help for all of us if it fits my daughter and your seeing is always beautiful!

  8. Goodmorning Mrs. Anderson. My name is Josh and I'm from Florida. I have a question about clothing and what the bible has to say about this topic. From my understanding a woman should wear dresses and men should be wearing pants according to Deuteronomy 22:5. I have had a girlfriend for 3 years now and I got saved a year and a half ago. Then, I got my girlfriend saved. We have been following Gods word to the best of our ability and plan to get married soon. The only problem is that she can't wear dresses all the time because of her job and school. We have gotten into arguments about it and she told me that she would wear dresses only once we got married. But I do also understand that it is an abomination unto the lord. Is this something that should stop me from marrying her if she doesnt change it now? Other opinions are appreciated as well. Thank you

    2. Just my opinion, but I would be cautious. If you've read the scriptures to her, and she is rejecting them, it's not a good sign. The very fact that she has argued with you about it makes me wonder. As women, we need to be in submission to our husbands. If she will not let you guide her in this circumstance, will she let you even after marriage. Last, but not least, her saying she'll wear dresses after you are married, but not before, is flat out wrong. In my opinion, she is playing a dangerous game with God. We aren't supposed to make deals with Him. We are to obey him. Just my opinion. I'm glad you asked about this as it's an area I've been struggling with as I have no husband or local church to help guide me.

    3. Hi Josh,

I disagree with anon above that this would be a deal-breaker in my opinion.

For one, it doesn't sound like your girlfriend disagrees with the Bible, just that at this point in her life, it's an inconvenience she is not willing to put up with for practical reasons.

It does not sound like you two are officially engaged, or have set a date for the wedding yet. A girlfriend is not a wife, nor does a girlfriend have to obey you. And while she should seek to follow your lead and please you, I can also understand why she doesn't want to give up her job and schooling for a 'maybe' marriage to you someday.

Thirdly, women want to be loved for who they are, not for who they could be. Dating should not feel like a job application, where certain criteria have to be met in order to be good enough for consideration. I am not saying that is how you make her feel, but it is possible.

Side note: I wore pants when we got married. There is a lot of room and time for growth over the course of a marriage. Women today are influenced by modern society to the point where clothing standards are far removed from God's ideas on the subject.

  9. Such lovely sibling bonding! Since your daughters are on the petite side, do you ever worry about the extra weight of carrying their siblings? My older daughters love to help out with their siblings, but I've never tried these types of carriers. As the babies get older and heavier, do you limit the time the older ones are allowed to carry them?

    1. Only Becca is petite for her age, both Miriam and Anna are quite tall and strong for their age. Miriam can even do several pullups! I'm not worried about her holding the baby. She would let me know if she got too tired, but that has never happened yet. I eventually have to insist on getting the baby back - ha!

Becca was not allowed to walk around while holding Chloe when she was little. She is allowed to do so now with Peter, since the sling takes the weight off her arms and puts it on her back and shoulders instead. Like Miriam, she never volunteers giving up the baby.

Anna is not allowed to hold the baby while walking around, though she does rock her while sitting down.

  13. I don't need one, just want to leave a comment!

I just love sibling love, it is so special! Those children of yours are just too sweet.

I have a sewing machine in my closet from my childhood collecting more dust than I'd like to admit to. I keep telling myself I'm going to teach myself or take classes somewhere. Any suggestions? Were you taught as a child how to sew or self-taught?

    1. So cute seeing the way an older sibling lovingly looks at their younger ones. My husband is 13 years older than his youngest sister. They still have a tight bond from all the time he spent "babysitting" her. He always adds a disclaimer that he basically raised her lol.

  18. As a lawyer, I have to note that 1) just because you disclaim liability does not mean that you would not bear one under the operation of the applicable statutes and case law, and 2) no liability would likely attach to you, UNLESS you sell your slings, in which case, the law does not permit you to disclaim all liability. You could still be held liable for such issues (if applicable) as a defective design, a manufacturing defect, a breach of express and implied warranty, and a failure to warn. Just a free and friendly legal advice :) Love your kids. Soooooooo cute! Especially my favorite, Chloe. And what a lovely and exquisitely tasteful name you selected for her!
