Summer reading

Our kids read a lot of books year-round, but I don't always have as much time to read as I would like to. Here is what we are reading this summer.

Lots and lots of library books...

Wait, there's more...

These are some of our library cards...

We are also re-visiting the 50 states we covered in great detail in the last two years with these little activity books. Perfect for silent time in the afternoon.

Organized, geographically, on one shelf. We have multiple copies of most of them.

And here is what I am reading. I know some of you may have questions about these books, and believe me, I'd love to do a detailed review on every single one of them. But - there's not enough time.

In brief:
  • Trim Healthy Mama: It works well, is pretty easy to follow, and can be adapted to fit a whole foods lifestyle if you are willing to go the extra mile. I have lost 10 lbs in 4 weeks (still about 20 more I'd like to shed), Solomon has lost - hold on now - 15 lbs in that same time frame, pretty much painlessly. Which puts him in a healthy range for his height and weight, and he is now back to eating like the rest of the family.
  • Cure Tooth Decay: highly recommend. Great nutritional advice.
  • Escape from Camp 14: Wow. Do not start on a day that you hope to get anything else done. I read the whole thing in one single day.
  • Hungarian vocab: I SO need to brush up on my Hungarian. The grammar comes easily to me, but I am lacking many words.
Wait, I forgot one - this is very informative and helpful. Lots of rave reviews on Amazon, too.

What are you reading this summer?

  1. I like the nursing one. I have such a problem being able to nurse more than a couple of months.

  3. I really wanted Trim Healthy Mama to work for me and I may have given up too soon. Please tell us more (even a few sentences).

  4. Hi Zsuzsanna, Your summer reading schedule looks awesome. I was noticing that you are reading Ramiel Nagel's Tooth Decay book. I just got an email the other day from other holistic dentists who are along the same line. They just stopped drinking their Kumbucha because '... a 16 ounce kombucha with an average of 25mg of fluoride has an equivalent amount of fluoride as 25 liters (roughly 6 gallons) of fluoridated water!' I guess the tea leaf uptakes large amounts of fluoride from the soil. Disappointing (unless the info is incorrect, please let me know.) Water kefir with a second ferment (with a bit of organic concord grape juice) is supper fizzy and amazing too!!! You probably do, do you make milk kefir as well? Great as a smoothy and amazing for the gut. Love to talk about this sort of thing, so while I am in this mode, I will share another bit of 'tooth' info someone passed on to me. You may know already. If you use a natural toothpaste and it has glycerin in it, it coats the teeth and prevents some re-mineralization. The glycerin is hard to get off after (another 30 or so brushings to get rid of it.) We switched to Redmond Clay toothpaste or make our own with their clay. It will help with re-mineralization (and no glycerin!) Okay, thanks again for your blog. Have a great summer.

  6. I'm so glad you posted the book on tooth decay. I went to the dentist today and told I need two root canals, crowns, 3 cavities filled and 3 wisdom teeth removed...the cost was through the roof. They want to put sealants on my older daughters teeth because they say I can pass this infection to them blah blah blah. I need to be even more proactive with dental health..and pronto at that.

  7. Glad your kids are taking advantage of summer reading!
You know that public libraries are tax payer supported government institutions, right? We're completely dependent on property taxes and bonds.

Just checking. I'm so sick of conservatives like Glenn Beck blabbing about the "free" education they got at the public library.

  8. Hi. Here is a list of what I'm reading this summer: Naturally Healthy Cuisine, The Naturally Healthy Woman, and Mommy Diagnostics, all by Shonda Parker. My children read so much there is not enough room to list all the books they read. We do plan to study nutrition and herbs together this summer so I will probably check some books out from the library on that subject for them. Also, Exploring Creation with Botany by Jeanie Fulbright is something I plan to do with them.
Here is the link to my blog so that you can see a little bit about why we are studying this topic.
