Bible Reading help

The "One Year Bible" has been a great resource to our family in keeping our Bible reading on track. In addition to reading it as a family for Bible time, the two oldest boys have been using it for their personal Bible reading, as well.

Last month, using the "One Year Bible", Solomon (9) finished reading through the entire Bible for the first time, plus twice though Psalms and Proverbs. It took him 14 months instead of one year. The year before that, he had read through just the New Testament, Psalms (2x), and Proverbs (2x) portion in one year.

Isaac (8) is 5 chapters short of completing the entire New Testament, and twice each in Psalms and Proverbs. It took him 11 months to do so - he picked up speed of his own accord so he can finish it before the 12 months will be over.

You may have heard that it only takes 15 minutes of reading per day to get through the Bible in one year. That may be true for fast readers who are not reading out loud. I find that for family Bible time, it takes 30 minutes to one hour to get through a daily portion, what with all the distractions that 6 children and a busy household cause. Many days, we do not complete an entire day portion, which is why I am glad that the older kids have their own personal reading time.

If you are interested in using this Bible, I would strongly recommend ordering the hardcover version. The paperback version does NOT hold up well to daily use - we have had two and both have fallen apart.

  1. Random question: Are the sections labeled as "January 1" or "Day 1"?

  2. Wow! Praise the Lord that your boys are reading the Bible through. Just imagine how much of the word they will have hidden if they keep this up through adulthood.

  3. Jessica, the sections are labeled by date (i.e., "January 1").

missionarymomma, you are so right. I do thank God for giving us children who have a desire to please Him. Sometimes I find it difficult to strike a balance between encouraging them to read and memorize the Bible, pray, etc, while also allowing them to develop their own walk with God without "running them into the ground" spiritually.

  4. I started reading a daily devotional and Bible with my four year old each morning. It is a child's Bible, so it doesn't come with a reading plan...we have enjoyed it.

I enjoy reading your blog! While I do not agree with a LOT of your view points, I have the UPMOST respect for your homemaking and parenting skills (why I read the blog). I know God is so pleased with you training your (actually His) children up in Him!! :)

  5. Way to go Solomon and Isaac! Our daugter has started reading through a one year Bible just recently and she is enjoying it! Thank you for sharing your resource.

Zsuzsanna can I ask in what other ways you encourage your children to walk with the Lord? Our family have no other Christian friends or family that we can ask! Our eldest daughter is almost 12 and I am wanting to encourage her to see the importance of salvation and beginning her own walk with the Lord.

  6. Do they come in a Catholic ED? KJV isn't a Catholic edition, but do you know?

Great job, Solomon and Isaac! I'm still working on reading the entire Bible. :)

  7. Thank you for sharing this! I left my favorite bible at home, so I bought a KJV bible that I found at a dollar store (I'm very proud of that find, ha) but the thing is, the text is so incredibly tiny! I would also like to order a KJVB on CD and send it to my dear sweet great grand aunt, who sadly is losing her vision which breaks my heart :(

  8. I'm going to check it out. I get stuck in Numbers and skip alot. Then, my attention drifts oft and I don't even remember what I read. So, 30 minutes is probably more like it for me.

  9. Thanks for this post! I have wanted one of these Bibles off and on for years, but just never got around to it. Looked at the 'Christian' book store and couldn't make myself spend that much! However it was half the price on Amazon!

  11. My family has been using this Bible for years. We keep it on the kitchen counter next to the phone. Christian Light Publications has it in their catalog for about $25. I like the Abeka KJV Bibles in their homeschool catalog. One is about $12 for grades 1-2 and the other one(3-12) says easy-to-read type-$12.25. It says Holy Bible on the cover. We also use the Cambridge large print KJV Bible.
